Service Dog Training Outline

Training
Breakdown

Temperament Testing:

The key to picking a service dog prospect is making sure they have the temperament for it. Many dogs fail out of training because this crucial step is over looked. Making the dogs core personality and traits fit to be a Service Dog.

Breed Selection:

Are there breeds that succeed more in service work than others? yes. However no breeds original purpose was for service work. This is where temperament testing is key. It is more about the individual dog than the breed. My retired service dog was a 65lb German Shepher and my current in training is a 10lb Italian Greyhound. In the U.S. any domesticated breed or mix can be a Service Dog. However, not every dog should be.

Socialization & Exposure:

Socialization is the process of exposing puppies to new experiences, people, and objects in a controlled and pleasant way. Socializing a dog is important because it teached your puppy hoe to react to the world in a healthy way, without fear or aggression. It can also help dogs develop long-term relationships with other animals and people.

There is a key window between 8-16 weeks people miss out on training due to vaccinations. However there are ways around this while keeping your puppy safe and giving them the best chance possible to succeed. Whether is carrying them, using a stroller, a wagon, or simply sitting in the car in the parking lot. Interaction and Socializtion are NOT the same.

Task training:

What makes a Service Dog?

A: The handlers disability and what the dog is trained to do to mitigate it. We focus on training Psychiatric Service Dogs with specific task including; DEEP PRESSURE OR TARGET PRESSURE - HARMFUL BEHAVIOR INTERRUPTION - BLOCKING - LETTING THE HANDLER KNOW SOMEONE IS WALKING AROUND THEM OR BEHIND THEM - GROUNDING - SURROUNDING AWARENESS

OTHER:

Training also includes;

-Public Access

-Gear Conditioning

-Body Handling

-Rehab after an attack

-Fear Phases

-Prepping for particular environments

-Tool Conditioning

Reeds K9 Training is proud to partner with Reeds Service Dogs to offer their "Train yourself" program.

Most programs take 20-25 weeks to complete but can vary on the age of the dog, how much time the handler puts in and the tasks needed.

-The first phase is focused on the skills needed to pass the AKC Star puppy OR Canine Good Citizenship course, these are the benchmark standard in obedience with a focus on proper socialization, exposure and building a relationship between dog & handler.

-During the second phase, time is spent socializing the team in dog friendly public places. When the trainer is confident the team is progressing sufficiently, the final phase will focus on training in public areas where only Service Dogs are allowed, tasks and refinment.

The team will graduate and become accredited by Reeds Service Dogs when the Public Access Temperament Test is given and the team passes. The team will carry the necessary health certificates and documentation and will be able to accompany the client to stores, restaurants, planes, living accommodations, and permitting full access to any and all places the client wishes to visit.

REEDS SERVICE DOGS have the ability to decrease isolation of the client, decrease the needs for many medications, decrease anxiety and panic attacks when in crowded public places, awaken them from nightmares and flashbacks, ‘have their backs’ when necessary, to name but a few.
